Lecture 6: - Athena is God of warfare and crafts - Aphrodite line 521 – mentioned with sexuality - Dionysis line 614 – referred to as a purveyor of wine - Poseidon line 667 - Aulis line 650 – place where all of Greeks amass; departed form here to go fight in Troy - Panhellenic reference (geographical) - Agamemnon was going to have to sacrifice his daughter to appease Artemis - Artemis is mad at Agamemnon for previous offense - Agamemnon sets his daughter to marry Achilles - Hesiod performs competitively with other poets and wins - other Greeks believe Hesiod went to compete with Homer - all the poetry we are reading were performed competitively - Hesiod has self refernce of his competition - rhapsodes – could sing thousands of lines of poetry - wrote poetry in dactiles _uu_uu - man should marry when he’s 30, women at 16 - Hesiod gives advice on friendship, were to go to the bathroom (not in streams/springs) Male is not to expose himself - kids should not be set on immovable objects - last part of poem is the “Days” part of the poem
