Lecture 7: - Leto gives birth to Apollo and Aretmis - line 20 etiological explanation for why there is a shrine int hat one place - Delos is personified; has conversation with Leto about what to do - Leto offers Delos a bribe to have birth on her - offers a temple to Apollo on Delos; that way people would come to the island - Delos says she has heard bad news about Apollo - Apollo would scorn her and push her into the sun Line 81-82 – Delos asks Leto to swear to make not only a Temple but an Oracle Line 84-88 – Leto promises everything but omits any mention of an oracle - Apollo’s orace is meant for Delphi - Leto has labor pains that last for 9 days - Diore – immortal mother of Aphrodite - persuade messenger of Gods, Iris with a necklace to go down and get Alethna and bring her to Delos for Leto - notice the theme of bribery - Goddesses surround Leto and are also on Mount Olympus surround Leo during labor - when she screams they scream with birthing mother - new born divinity is given nectar and ambrosia to retain its divinity - Apollo announces his mission is to hold the lyre (bow) and to be mouthpiece of Zeus - divinities are precocious; Apollo gets up and walks over the earth; Delos is then covered in gold - lines 146-179 – poet changes gears and gives us idealized happenings of what happened
