Why America should outlaw spanking For decades, the institution of spanking has been implemented to the American society. This method of scolding has been proven to more effective than defective. So why should it be outlawed? Of course in some cases spanking is inappropriately used by some individuals that lack the knowledge and temperament of the action they are doing there is no real purpose behind it .I was spanked as a kid and it was only when I went out of line with my parents. I never questioned why they did it because I knew what I did was wrong and my parents did it out of love and for my wellbeing. Therefore, I firmly believe that spanking with the correct acumen is the best way to raise a child. Much research such as studied by Elizabeth Gershoff of the University of Texas and Andrew Grogan of the University of Michigan (2016) have identified the negative effects of spanking and are highly one sided in their outcomes labeling it as highly ineffective and harmful. However, Dr. Diana Baumrind a psychologist of the University of California asserted that social scientist such as Gershoff and Grogan had overstepped the evidence in claiming that spanking caused lasting harm to the child. “The Scientific case against the use of normative physical punishment is a leaky dike, not a solid edifice.” Dr. Baumrind said(2001). When researching more than 100 families, she cited that mild to moderate spanking had no detrimental effects when abuse was rule out. It also showed that parents who link showing love and being firm during child rearing produced children that were exceptionally competent and well adjusted. This proves that raising a child is purely based on creating that mutual parent to child respect. When this this done the child will understand his or her boundaries otherwise they will face the penalty.
