Chem 1057 CENTER FOR LEARNING AND TEACHING J. Walcott LEARNING STRATEGIES CENTER Fall 2008 Review Guide #1 Chapter 1 I. Review of Concepts from General Chemistry A. An atomic orbital is a description of the wave properties of an electron in an atom. A three- dimensional region of space in which the electron is most likely to occur characterizes each orbital. Each orbital can be described by 4 quantum numbers: the principal quantum number, the angular momentum quantum number, the magnetic quantum number, and the spin quantum number. B. You should be able to write the electron configuration for an atom containing more than 1 electron. Recall that the Aufbau principa l says to place electrons one by one into orbitals of the lowest energy first. The Pauli exclusion principle states that no more than two electrons (with opposite spins) may occupy each atomic orbital. Hund s rules state that to distribute electrons among identical orbitals of equal energy (degenerate orbitals), single electrons are placed into separate orbitals before the orbitals are filled; and that the spins of these unpaired electrons are the same. C. Valence electrons are those in the outermost shell in an atom. The number of valence electrons for any neutral atom in an A group of the periodic table (except for Helium) equals its group number. The tendency of atoms to gain or lose valence electrons to form ions with the noble-gas configuration is known as the octet rule (duet for Hydrogen). D. Understand the distinction between an ionic bond
