CAN NICE GUYS FINISH FIRST? 3 Executive Summary Adam Baker has gone through major challenges throughout his career before becoming COO. At his current position, he feels like he has gotten where he is by being both nice, yet assertive, proving himself to be more than qualified, with the case study highlighting that he was “the number one golden boy at a school that produced a lot of golden boys and girls 1 ”. Throughout his career as COO of this company, he gained a very close relationship with his boss (sometimes mentioned as his “mentor” in the case study), looking up to him with a sense of respect that shone through the work he provided the company. Therefore, because of this special relationship, Adam was shocked by his boss’ decision to not give Adam the opportunity to lead the company’s latest venture. There was no explanation as to why he had not received the opportunity and therefore Adam was left with the difficult decision of whether he should question his boss’ decision and try convince him otherwise, or not. He showed concern in ruining his relationship with his boss if he questioned it, however he also thought that it was extremely unfair that his boss provided him with no explanation. This therefore led Adam to believe that his boss did not trust him with this venture due to the failure of his first CEO position of a company called “Tallyrymple” that, within a year, the company was facing bankruptcy. Once Adam had heard his boss’ decision, he ended up seeking the help of two friends on what he should do and how he should think. One of his friends suggested that he just accept that he did not get the venture and just wait until the next one in order to preserve his relationship with his boss, however the other friend suggested the opposite – that he fight for the position.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
