Ialaina Burgos ENG 104C Prof. Stanphill May 24, 2016 Research Presentation Outline CLAIM : Yunior is the representation of the Dominican masculine traits that Oscar contradicts in significance to his struggles to prove his own masculinity. Article I. Roots, Routes and Transnational Attractions: Dominican Migration, Gender, and Cultural Change Section I.1 Gender Identity and Cultural Change (a) The Dominican novel, How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents by Julia Alvarez, tells the tale of 4 young girls migrating from the Dominican Republic to New York City and is a mixture of fiction and autobiography (Sorensen 109). (i) Interesting aspect of the novel is that there is a split in gender identity contrasting in machismo and men in contrast, seem to face more difficulties as a result of the conflicting demands embedded in the Dominican concept of machismo (Sorensen 109). Section I.2 Dominican Machismo (i) Tells the story of Orlando Suarez having a harmonious family but went off with another woman and has a child with her and his macho behavior, his sexual capacity, was negatively perceived (Sorensen 111). (ii) Orlando acted machista by taking another woman but had failed other obligations of macho behavior by not providing for his family. This suggests an ambiguity in the way the macho concept is used (Sorensen 112).
