1) What are greenhouse gases? Gases that warm a planet’s surface by Absorbing outgoing infrared radiation - radiant heat - and reradiating some of it back toward the surface. 2) What is greenhouse effect? Natural process that keeps the surfaces of the Earth and other terrestrial planets warmer than they would be in the absence of an atmosphere; the process involves greenhouse gases that warm the planet’s surface by absorbing outgoing infrared radiation and reradiating some of it back toward the surface. 3) What is global warming? A warming of the Earth’s atmosphere due to an anthropogenic enhancement of the greenhouse effect; it is an increase in Earth’s surface temperature brought by a combination of industrial and agricultural activities 4) What are the four fundamental components of the Earth system? (gases surrounding Earth) Hydrosphere (reservoirs of water/ice) Atmosphere Biota (living organisms) Solid Earth (rocks/minerals) (core/mantle/crust) 5) What are the three major global environmental changes that are occurring today? (hint: global warming, ozone depletion, tropical deforestation) Global Warming Ozone Depletion Deforestation and Loss of Biodiversity 6) What do Figure 1-2 and Figure 1-3 tell us about CO2 concentration? 7) What does Figure 1-4 tell us about the Earth’s temperature? What is the relationship between the Earth’s temperature and CO2 concentration?
