Emily Nebraska Outline Chapter 2 9/10/16 1) The Problem of Liberty a) The Colonial Mind i) Many colonists thought that in order to secure their liberties, they had to break away from English Rule. ii) Colonists sought to protect the traditional liberties of which they were entitled to in the Declaration of Independence. 1. Life 2. Liberty 3. Property (Locke) / Pursuit of happiness (Jefferson) iii) The colonists had specific complaints about King George III. 1. There were 27 complaints made by Jefferson. 2. All regarded the violation of inalienable rights. iv) The war regarded political issues rather than economic issues aka “War of Ideology.” b) The Real Revolution i) This revolution began before the war and continued after it. 1. It was about more than just driving out British forces. ii) John Adams claimed that the “real revolution” was the “radical changes in the principles, opinions, sentiments, and affections of the people.”
