USC, FO102 Olivia Booth 9/11/08 “Tile Design” Due date: TBD Objective: This assignment is about shape (still black and white), and becoming aware of negative and positive shapes in particular; a transformation (in varying degrees depending on the designer) from an objective/representational image to a nonobjective/abstract one; the use of a grid as a basic means of organizing, and in this case what results in a pattern of sorts; and it’s also an exercise in cutting with an exacto knife (not to mention more drawing in pen) to create a gradient of black and white shapes. Description: We began by drawing an object from observation, then reduced it to black pen contour line (all lines-outline, internal lines, even lines of reflection), and cropped it ( also a form of abstracting, depending on the degree to which you take it) into a 2”x2” frame. Then, to slice up negative space, we extended implied lines ( we might argue that all lines imply further extension- i.e.Piet Mondrian), and again this was done only to the degree that the designer wanted, so here one also
