Chem 204 Chapter 4 Notes Work and heat are two modes of exchanging energy. Energy can be exchanged between a closed system(that one allows the exchange of energy) and its surroundings by either doing work or through a process called heating, which is a transfer of energy as a result of temperature difference between the system and the surroundings Walls that allows heat as a mode of energy transfer are called diathermic Walls that don’t allow heat transfer is called adiabatic Motion stimulated by the arrival of energy as heat is random, motion stimulated by arrival of energy from work is uniform. WORK Expansion work is a type of work done when a system expands against an opposing pressure. System expands from initial volume Vi to final volume Vf Piston of an area A oppose the gas expansion and moves a distance of h as result of expansion Force opposing the expansion is the constant external pressure Pex multipled by A, area of the piston. Thus external pressure determines how much work a system does Sign conventions: w= negative if work is done by the system q = negative if the system transfer heat to the surroundings Greatest work for a given change in volume:
