Biography Born on May 13, 1883 in Kymi, Greece Graduated from the University of Athens in 1904 Military service as an assistant surgeon for short time Graduated and received PHD in Zoology from University of Munich, Germany in 1910

Discovery In 1923, after observation of vaginal fluid masked to be cellular debris from female guinea pigs, Papanicolaou discovered cell transformation activity.

continued... Papanicolaou soon after began research on women over the course of different menstrual cycles. Abnormal cancer cells and activity were revealed to Papanicolaou after examining a slide with a smear from the uterine cervix from one of his subjects. Though physicians were skeptical, Papanicolaou announced the technique of examining a smear from the lining of the vaginal tract under a microscope as a way to identify cervical cancer.
