5 INTRODUCTION Fuel cell basics Basically, a fuel cell is a device that employs hydrogen as fuel to produce electrons, protons, heat and water. The mechanism technology of a fuel cell is mainly based on a simple combustion reaction as shown below: 2H 2 (g) + O 2 (g) –2H 2 O (l) The electrons can be harnessed to generate electricity in a consumable form via a simple circuit with a load. Simple fuel cells have a very small area of contact between the electrolyte, the electrode plate and gas fuel. Every fuel cell has two electrodes, one positive and one negative called respectively, an anode electrode and cathode electrode. The reaction mechanism, as shown above, is the one that produces electricity at the electrodes (Thanh et al. pg 984). Hydrogen is the basic fuel, but fuel cells also need oxygen. One significant appeal of fuel cells is that they provide electricity with very little pollution. Much of the gas proportions that is oxygen and hydrogen are actively used in generating current and ultimately they combine to form a harmless byproduct, namely water. One detail of terminology: a single given fuel cell provides a tiny amount of direct current termed as DC (direct current electricity). Practically, numerous fuel cells are normally assembled into a stack ( Ajay, et al. pg. 31) Cell or stack, the principles are similar. Why are we studying fuel cells? For our current time, there is a lot of active study throughout the globe on solving engineering problems that currently prevent fuel cells from becoming commercially accessible. The final noted hurdle that ought to be solved before commercialization can start is the power industry requires being familiarized with this coming technology. Thus as an introduction to fuel cells, we have to study cell cells for two significant reasons. First they an emerging technology that requires being understood We need to learn how the presence of fuel cells will change the modern application of energy dependent devices. The Technology of Fuel cell First of all, the basic technology of fuel cell machine is critical to be understood before introducing the more advanced types of it. The purpose of a fuel cell machine in general is to generate an electrical current that can be directed outside the cell to perform work, like powering an electric motor or illuminating a light bulb or a place. Since the way motor or current behaves, this current returns to the fuel cell, finishing an electrical circuit. The chemical reaction mechanisms that generate this current are crucial to how a fuel cell works. There are several
