List and discuss Darwin’s “Postulates” with and without genetic information (i.e., how natural selection works) Differentiate among different mechanisms of evolution ( mutation , migration , genetic drift , and natural selection ) – which is most common? I. Natural Selection a. Natural Selection – heritable traits beneficial to survival are selected and become common in a population b. Charles Darwin concluded that evolution is the logical outcome of the following (“Darwin’s Postulates”): i. Individuals within populations are variable ii. Variations among individuals are heritable iii. In every generation, some individuals are more successful at surviving and reproducing than others (“ fitness ”) iv. Survival and reproduction are nonrandom c. Fitness is determined by the environment d. Changes in the environment change fitness II. Natural Selection (applying genetics) a.
