CASE WRITING ASSIGNMENT (BKB1022) Case-based workshops: Solving business cases using state-of-the-art theoretical insights and empirical findings is an important competency for aspiring managers (often described using terms such as “the scientific-practitioner- model” and “evidence - based management” – we discuss this competency in more detail in class one). The ability to solve business cases is commonly used as a selection criteria to determine whether individuals will function effectively as a manager or consultant (we discuss this in more detail in the class on selection). Because of this importance, in this course, we will use the case-based method to teach students about the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to become an effective human resource leader. Specifically, in the workshops we will present cases to help you better understand the different ways to think about one or more HR-topics (recruitment, training and development, etc.) as though you were the team member, leader, or HR-manager who is faced with this problem. The case method has been shown to enhance overall student engagement in course materials because it challenges them to apply more abstract academic theories/research findings to concrete problems. Ideally, all managers would follow this same scientific-practitioner ideal to make sure that their management approach is evidence-based. Unfortunately, practice often hasn’t caught up with academic insights (as we will see for various of the HR topics). We believe this is only partially attributable to the motivation or opportunity of managers to implement this evidence and more so because managers lack the skill to use academic knowledge and apply it to their work setting. We see it as our role (and mission) as professors to make sure that students are developed with this scientific-practitioner mindset, as well as with the accompanying knowledge, such that management practice becomes more evidence-based. Naturally, we need your help to accomplish this objective. The case-based method assumes that you are well-prepared (e.g., by reading the accompanying chapters) and willing to share your ideas. Only through active engagement of students do we spark the creative conversation needed to come to the best managerial solutions. We thus welcome and invite you to actively participate in class. Writing your own case: We believe that one of the hallmarks of whether someone understands a certain topic is whether this person can effectively solve business cases in such a way that they can clearly describe both the problem and the solution to others. Understanding the complexity of a certain phenomenon and being able to take a step back from that complexity and “communicate” or “translate” it to others in a step -wise and digestible manner is challenging but shows that one truly masters a subject. Therefore, in addition to the final examination on the class content, we have assigned you to work together in groups of five students to develop your own case. For

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
