The Lord’s Proprietors were a group of people that governed South Carolina. They were  granted this power by Lord Ashley. The government they created was not successful. “One of  the reasons that the proprietors did not make any money had to do with the uncertain nature of  the government they established and the men they sent to act in their names” (Edgar 82). They  ruled by using the Fundamental Constitutions. One major issue with their government is that the  Fundamental Constitutions was never ratified. The proprietors tried many different versions of  the Constitutions to gain approval from the colonists (82). The colonists rejected every version.  “The Fundamental Constitutions guaranteed that meaningful political and governmental  authority would be retained by the proprietors—and kept out of the hands of the colonists (83).  The Fundamental Constitutions were the basis for the government even though it was never  technically ratified. Their government contained a Grand Council. This Grand Council had
