How to Analyze Artwork in Prof. Hom’s American Humanities Course Our class will take a three-prong approach towards analyzing artworks. The formal elements of art are: Line: The most basic visual element, lines can be used to define shapes and figures, but also to indicate motion, emotion, sight line, and other elements Color: Can be defined on several scales, including hue, value (light and dark), intensity (bright or dull) and saturation Shape: A two-dimensional area with boundaries defined by lines or colors Form: Three-dimensional shape, either real or in illusion Naturalism or Abstraction: How much does the image look like the “real world” Composition is the way all of the visual elements are arranged to make the whole image. Some of the major compositional devices are: Symmetry: Mirroring of two halves of a work Balance: An even use of elements throughout a work Proportion and Scale: The relation in size of parts of an image to the whole

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
