Margarita Castro HLT 1353: Section #11053 When life happens Mental health can be defined by the World Health Organization as a “state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, and can cope with the normal stressor of life, can work productively and fruitfully and is able to contribute to he or his community” (Metal health, 2014). However, this is more easily said than done. In most cases the ones who are struggling do not seek help and this could be a result of the negative stigma associated with mental health. On an everyday basis, I can manage my stress and anxiety fairly well. I enjoy things like listening to music, going for a run, and planning a schedule to avoid excessive stress. However, nothing could have prepared me for the events that follow. Not long ago in April of this year two extremely unpleasant events took place. The first one happened April 13 th , 2017. The day was uneventful until my Health and Disease Prevention professor made an announcement that a freshman male at our university had committed suicide the day before. A name was not released yet but it upset me to think that someone felt as though they had no other choice but to take their life and especially so young. As I stepped into my next class, Intro to Poetry, I continued to feel uneasy about the news I had just received. In the meantime, I took my seat and waited for my professor to walk in. As he sat down at his desk, the class became silent.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
