Objective: The purpose of this experiment is to determine the mass percent sodium bicarbonate (sodium hydrogen carbonate) in an Alka-Seltzer tablet using the ideal gas law. Method: The carbon dioxide evolves when the Alka-Seltzer is added to acid solution and is collected. The change in pressure due to evolved carbon dioxide will be measured. Using the ideal gas law will allow the calculation of moles of carbon dioxide. The moles of carbon dioxide is related to the moles of NaHCO 3 . Generally, the acidity necessary for the reaction comes in the tablet itself in the form of a solid organic acid, citric acid. During the experiment, HCl is added to the water to speed the reaction to completion. The following factors must also be accounted for: Carbon dioxide has an appreciable solubility in water and and we’ll assume that 8.5 mg of carbon dioxide dissolves in the injected HCl solution.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
