Regina Pranata AHS 1000-05 Professor. Li Xing Hua March 26 th 2015 Journal 7 In chapter four of the book The Myth of Progress , Wessels introduces the concept of “coevolution” to explain the emergence of biodiversity in our ecosystem. According to Wessels, coevolution ( a process by which species adapt to each other) decreases the size of an organism’s total ecological role (niche), which eventually results in increasing species richness –called biodiversity. Although he believes that our natural system will keep growing more diverse, he claims that our global economy is moving in the opposite direction. Nowadays, corporations have rapidly grown into huge transnational companies through mergers and acquisitions. As many corporations become transnational, they acquire more power political influence. This power allows them to weaken laws and regulations that impede them from reaching their companies’ interests which usually focus on high productivity and high profitability. As a result, citizens’ voices that are rich in diversity are rarely heard and followed
