Prabhleen Sidhu English 1A Essay #3 21st Century Education “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education,” Martin Luther King, Jr.. 21st century education has been a disappointment to the ‘true’ meaning of education. Children lack creativity and imagination. This state of mind is not only limited to children, adults too, are focused solely on themselves, and live in this state selfishness and “me.” However, it is not completely the child’s fault. The average classroom setting is a bland looking room, with nothing on the walls, and all the chairs facing forward. Teachers think of themselves as dominant and superior to their students. The work given to these children are packets, books to read from then write essays on, read off of powerpoints. With these factors, can you blame students to have a lack of interest in school, and not being able to succeed? Into the Wild by Jon Karkauer is a book about a boy who is fed up with his life without adventure and decides to hitchhike to Alaska. I wrote this paper using ideas from the movie “Recycling a Gift.” Children are not allowed to speak their mind. They are holed up in classrooms, and this results in children lacking creativity, imagination, and sitting a in classroom bored as hell. Education can be found nearly anywhere. Education has played a major role in the modern life to all individuals in the society. It has enabled societies to prosper both socially and economically by enabling them to develop common culture and values. Unfortunately, creativity and the sense of equality is found rarely in classroom

environment. There is a reason when a child is asked what his favorite subject is, he replies “recess.” They say recess because they finally get a break from their stuffy classroom where they have been working on monotonous packets all day. But education can be induced just as easily as it is repelled. Environment is a key factor in education. Parents who work double, minimum wage jobs are often too busy to take care of their children. Majority of these children take advantage of their freedom and rebel or give into peer pressure easily, this plays a huge factor when it comes to life at school. In this essay, I want to go into depth about nature and travel and it’s effect on education, schools that have built its entire structure and curriculum on organic learning and creativity, and what I want 21st century education to be. Nature is defined as the phenomena of the physical world collectively, including plants, animals, the landscape, and other features and products of the earth, as opposed to humans or human creations. Nature inspires creativity ,clarity, and calmness. However, 21st century education does not take the advantage of nature.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
