L ECTURE What is Psychology? - Science of mind and behavior (and its causes) - How and why organisms do what they do - Enormous range of phenomena - Relates to biology, medicine, computer science anthropology, and sociology - Both animal and human behavior - Conscious or aware & subconscious or unaware behavior of individuals & groups Behavior - Observable and inner processes (thoughts, feelings, images, physiological reactions i.e. lie detector tests); always trying to answer the question of why (usually with finding out how) Causes of Behavior - Biological factors - Psychological factors - Environmental factors (i.e. student acts like students in a classroom) Research Methods - Basic research (describes behavior and identify factors and influencing or causing behavior) - Applied research (designed to solve specific practical problems i.e. speech psychologist) Robber’s Cave Study Basic Research Findings: o Competition breeds hostility o Conflict decreased by increasing group interdependence (tasks which require greater resources than either group could provide independently) Applied this to Jigsaw Classrooms (different ethnicities had to work together to make the class function) Aim of Psychology - NOT devoted to intra or inter personal conflict resolution - The GOAL is to get the FACTS that are GENERAL that apply to ALL HUMANS (to help make predictions of behaviors under circumstances for most people) -
