The Roman Empire (con’t) -had entertainment between courses many different forms ex. Musicians, dancers, poetry. Housing— insulae (islands)—for lower- class Romans Roman upper class and the mass of the romans (extreme difference in the living style) Had chamber pot for bathrooms. Would empty them in hallway or out window. Nicest appt in the bottom and less nice at the top. Appts were poorly built. Often caught on fire. The diet of lower-class Romans. Wheat bread- grain came from Egypt. Olives, grapes, little meat. Protein came from cheese. Lotsssss of Wine Emperors and the provision of “Bread and Circuses” for the masses: Augustus distributed free grain to about 200,000 people in Rome Provision of entertainment--80 C.E. the Colosseum in Rome was opened by Emperor Titus; Seneca’s commentary on the gladiatorial games -Augustus was conscience of the face that food was a big issue for people in Rome.
