MGCR222 – Introduction to Organizational Behaviour Chapter 3 – Understanding Individual Attributes Abilities Abilities = innate capabilities to perform a specific task; Born with them or not, stable traits; Types of abilities: o Physical abilities o Cognitive abilities: characteristics of a person’s intellect and its functioning. They include reasoning, verbal and quantitative processing and comprehension, memory, spatial and perceptual recognition. Predict academic and career success; Strongest predictor of job performance, because it contributes to learning, skill development and adaptation to changing environments Also linked to lower counterproductive behaviour, because more aware of the negative consequences Personality One the most enduring part of the self; Unique and relatively stable pattern of behaviours, thoughts, and emotions show by individuals. It shapes what individuals are motivated to do and how they perform in organizational roles. Deeply rooted in their biological makeup Big Five personality types: o Extraversion: sociable, talkative, assertive and adventurous; Predicts success in jobs with a great deal of social interaction; Initiate actions and often emerge as leaders Convention OB: useful for being assertive, engaging with customers and initiating actions; Sustainable OB: useful for being sociable, encouraging community and leading collective actions; o Agreeableness; good-natured, cooperative, trustful, not jealous; Might be undervalued because it does not predict performance in most jobs, but contributes to higher levels of cohesion, less conflict and better overall performance;
