Culture: of any system or group has to do with its ideas, beliefs, norms, values and how those influence behaviour, we use these things to construct reality AND its also the way that we behave towards the meaning that we constructed for these things - Beliefs: what your society teaches you to be true EX: do heterosexuals exist? It is obvious to us but Abraham Lincoln would have said no § - Values: beliefs that designate what is good or bad They guide our choices, tell us what to do, not all values are goo EX: heterosexuals You should or shouldn't be one § EX: don't step on the M § - *all values are beliefs but not all beliefs are values Norms: values that are reinforced with social consequences (rewards, punishments) Society uses these to create paths of least resistance, they tell us what society wants us to do EX: setting up traffic cones § Some norms can be seen as functional (it makes society work
