Unformatted text preview: Keith​ ​Hunter​ ​Jesperson Maya​ ​Pankratz 1350008383 05-26-2017 AP​ ​Psychology​ ​Period​ ​7 Second​ ​Semester​ ​2016-17 Section​ ​1:​ ​Perpetrator​ ​Information Keith​ ​Hunter​ ​Jesperson,​ ​a​ ​white​ ​male,​ ​was​ ​39​ ​years​ ​old-​ ​he​ ​was​ ​born​ ​on​ ​April​ ​6th,​ ​1955when​ ​he​ ​was​ ​arrested​ ​in​ ​Washougal,​ ​Washington,​ ​for​ ​the​ ​murder​ ​of​ ​his​ ​fiancee.​ ​Weighing​ ​270 pounds​ ​at​ ​the​ ​time​ ​of​ ​his​ ​arrest​ ​and​ ​measuring​ ​out​ ​six​ ​and​ ​a​ ​half​ ​feet​ ​tall,​ ​Jesperson​ ​has​ ​a​ ​large, even​ ​oversized​ ​build.​ ​(Jesperson,​ ​Keith,​ ​2015)​ ​This​ ​is​ ​paired​ ​with​ ​thick,wavy​ ​hair​ ​that​ ​is​ ​kept short​ ​or​ ​left​ ​to​ ​grow​ ​down​ ​to​ ​the​ ​neck,​ ​sometimes​ ​even​ ​looking​ ​like​ ​a​ ​mullet.​ ​Though​ ​blonde​ ​is his​ ​natural​ ​color,​ ​Jesperson’s​ ​hair​ ​was​ ​brown​ ​later​ ​in​ ​life.​ ​He​ ​may​ ​have​ ​been​ ​just​ ​barely unshaven​ ​at​ ​the​ ​time​ ​of​ ​his​ ​arrest,​ ​most​ ​of​ ​the​ ​time​ ​his​ ​beard​ ​was​ ​fully​ ​grown​ ​and​ ​bushy. Factoring​ ​in​ ​a​ ​tanned​ ​complexion​ ​from​ ​years​ ​of​ ​long-haul​ ​truck​ ​driving,​ ​and​ ​Jesperson’s​ ​overall appearance​ ​comes​ ​out​ ​to​ ​being​ ​unkempt​ ​and​ ​even​ ​rugged,​ ​as​ ​well​ ​as​ ​overbearing​ ​and intimidating.​ ​(Keith​ ​Hunter​ ​Jesperson,​ ​2016) At​ ​the​ ​time​ ​of​ ​his​ ​arrest,​ ​he​ ​did​ ​not​ ​panic​ ​and​ ​kept​ ​a​ ​somewhat​ ​rational​ ​demeanor; Jesperson​ ​refused​ ​to​ ​talk​ ​without​ ​an​ ​attorney​ ​and​ ​would​ ​not​ ​give​ ​in​ ​to​ ​the​ ​demands​ ​of​ ​the​ ​police and​ ​also​ ​did​ ​not​ ​appear​ ​confrontational​ ​or​ ​aggressive,​ ​or​ ​try​ ​to​ ​resist​ ​arrest.​ ​It​ ​is​ ​assumed​ ​that​ ​his general​ ​demeanor​ ​as​ ​an​ ​adult​ ​was​ ​similar​ ​in​ ​the​ ​way​ ​he​ ​kept​ ​his​ ​cool​ ​and​ ​managed​ ​to​ ​manipulate the​ ​authority​ ​figures​ ​(as​ ​was​ ​later​ ​described​ ​after​ ​his​ ​conviction).​ ​(Krueger​ ​2006)​ ​Though​ ​his 1995​ ​arrest​ ​for​ ​murder​ ​in​ ​which​ ​he​ ​spent​ ​jail​ ​time,​ ​there​ ​is​ ​one​ ​previous​ ​arrest​ ​on​ ​Jesperson’s record.​ ​In​ ​1990,​ ​he​ ​was​ ​arrested​ ​for​ ​questioning​ ​after​ ​a​ ​woman​ ​reported​ ​to​ ​the​ ​police​ ​that​ ​he attempted​ ​to​ ​kill​ ​her​ ​in​ ​his​ ​car.​ ​However,​ ​authorities​ ​seems​ ​to​ ​believe​ ​his​ ​version​ ​of​ ​the​ ​story over​ ​hers,​ ​so​ ​he​ ​was​ ​only​ ​given​ ​sexual​ ​assault​ ​charges.​ ​After​ ​failing​ ​to​ ​appear​ ​in​ ​court​ ​to​ ​face these​ ​charges,​ ​there​ ​was​ ​a​ ​warrant​ ​for​ ​his​ ​arrest,​ ​but​ ​the​ ​judge​ ​reviewed​ ​his​ ​case​ ​after​ ​the​ ​arrest and​ ​dropped​ ​the​ ​charges​ ​from​ ​a​ ​felony​ ​to​ ​a​ ​misdemeanor-​ ​they​ ​were​ ​eventually​ ​exonerated completely.​ ​(Keith​ ​Hunter​ ​Jesperson,​ ​2016) Section​ ​2:​ ​M.O.​ ​/​ ​Crime​ ​Scenes Keith​ ​Hunter​ ​Jesperson​ ​was​ ​arrested​ ​for​ ​questioning​ ​in​ ​Las​ ​Cruces,​ ​Mexico​ ​on​ ​March 22nd,​ ​1995​ ​for​ ​the​ ​murder​ ​of​ ​his​ ​fiancee,​ ​Julie​ ​Ann​ ​Winningham.​ ​He​ ​was​ ​held​ ​for​ ​six​ ​hours​ ​by Detective​ ​Buckner​ ​and​ ​refused​ ​to​ ​give​ ​any​ ​information​ ​without​ ​the​ ​presence​ ​of​ ​an​ ​attorney,​ ​so was​ ​eventually​ ​released.​ ​After​ ​that,​ ​Jesperson​ ​headed​ ​to​ ​Arizona,​ ​where​ ​he​ ​wrote​ ​incriminating letters​ ​to​ ​two​ ​family​ ​members​ ​before​ ​calling​ ​the​ ​detective​ ​to​ ​confess​ ​to​ ​Winningham’s​ ​murder. (Krueger​ ​2006)​ ​Though​ ​police​ ​never​ ​received​ ​the​ ​letter​ ​he​ ​sent​ ​to​ ​his​ ​children,​ ​his​ ​brother,​ ​Brad, turned​ ​in​ ​the​ ​letter​ ​confessing​ ​to​ ​eight​ ​murders​ ​in​ ​total.​ ​Prior​ ​to​ ​this,​ ​Jesperson​ ​had​ ​written confessions​ ​on​ ​bathroom​ ​stalls​ ​after​ ​others​ ​were​ ​receiving​ ​“attention”​ ​for​ ​a​ ​murder​ ​he committed.​ ​After​ ​many​ ​of​ ​his​ ​crimes,​ ​he​ ​also​ ​sent​ ​a​ ​letter​ ​to​ ​an​ ​editor​ ​at​ ​The​ ​Oregonian​ ​detailing his​ ​actions.​ ​These​ ​confessions​ ​were​ ​all​ ​signed​ ​with​ ​a​ ​smiley​ ​face,​ ​giving​ ​him​ ​the​ ​nickname “Happy​ ​Face​ ​Killer”.​ ​His​ ​identity​ ​was​ ​unknown,​ ​however,​ ​until​ ​after​ ​his​ ​arrest.​ ​(Keith​ ​Hunter Jesperson,​ ​2016) All​ ​of​ ​Jesperson’s​ ​victims​ ​were​ ​found​ ​nude​ ​and​ ​dumped​ ​over​ ​embankments​ ​on​ ​the​ ​side of​ ​the​ ​road,​ ​showing​ ​signs​ ​of​ ​strangulation​ ​and​ ​sexual​ ​assault.​ ​He​ ​murdered​ ​them​ ​in​ ​his​ ​vehicle (a​ ​semi-truck)​ ​in​ ​each​ ​case​ ​except​ ​that​ ​of​ ​his​ ​first​ ​victim,​ ​Taunja​ ​Bennett,​ ​whom​ ​he​ ​killed​ ​in​ ​his home.​ ​It​ ​is​ ​thought​ ​that​ ​Winningham​ ​was​ ​also​ ​killed​ ​in​ ​the​ ​home​ ​they​ ​shared​ ​while​ ​they​ ​were engaged.​ ​Though​ ​their​ ​bodies​ ​were​ ​found,​ ​some​ ​were​ ​never​ ​identified​ ​even​ ​after​ ​the​ ​killer confessed,​ ​as​ ​he​ ​did​ ​not​ ​even​ ​know​ ​their​ ​identities.​ ​Besides​ ​their​ ​bodies,​ ​there​ ​was​ ​no​ ​evidence except​ ​for​ ​the​ ​belongings​ ​of​ ​his​ ​first​ ​victim​ ​that​ ​were​ ​recovered​ ​when​ ​he​ ​led​ ​police​ ​to​ ​the​ ​place he​ ​hid​ ​them.​ ​In​ ​the​ ​case​ ​of​ ​two​ ​of​ ​the​ ​victims,​ ​a​ ​prostitute​ ​whose​ ​name​ ​Jesperson​ ​said​ ​was Claudia​ ​and​ ​a​ ​girl​ ​named​ ​Angela​ ​Surbrize,​ ​he​ ​tied​ ​their​ ​bodies​ ​to​ ​his​ ​truck​ ​and​ ​dragged​ ​them​ ​for miles,​ ​eliminating​ ​much​ ​of​ ​their​ ​identifying​ ​aspects.​ ​(Keith​ ​Hunter​ ​Jesperson,​ ​2016) Taunja​ ​Bennett,​ ​a​ ​white​ ​female,​ ​was​ ​23​ ​when​ ​she​ ​was​ ​killed​ ​by​ ​Jesperson​ ​in​ ​his​ ​home​ ​in Portland,​ ​Oregon​ ​on ​January​ ​23rd,​ ​1990.​ ​His​ ​next​ ​victim​ ​was​ ​a​ ​white​ ​female​ ​prostitute​ ​in​ ​Blythe, California-​ ​the​ ​one​ ​he​ ​claimed​ ​was​ ​named​ ​Claudia-​ ​in​ ​summer​ ​of​ ​1992.​ ​She​ ​was​ ​a​ ​“Jane​ ​Doe” until​ ​his​ ​confession​ ​and​ ​her​ ​age​ ​remains​ ​unknown.​ ​In​ ​September​ ​of​ ​1992,​ ​he​ ​killed​ ​Cynthia​ ​Lyn Rose​ ​of​ ​Turlock,​ ​California,​ ​who​ ​was​ ​32​ ​years​ ​old​ ​at​ ​the​ ​time.​ ​His​ ​next​ ​murder​ ​took​ ​place​ ​in Salem,​ ​Oregon​ ​and​ ​the​ ​victim​ ​was​ ​yet​ ​another​ ​white​ ​female​ ​named​ ​Laurie​ ​Ann​ ​Pentland.​ ​She was​ ​26​ ​at​ ​the​ ​time.​ ​Jesperson’s​ ​next​ ​two​ ​victims​ ​were​ ​known​ ​as​ ​“Jane​ ​Doe”​ ​until​ ​his​ ​confession in​ ​1995.​ ​One,​ ​found​ ​in​ ​Santa​ ​Nella,​ ​California,​ ​was​ ​originally​ ​thought​ ​to​ ​have​ ​died​ ​of​ ​a​ ​drug overdose​ ​and​ ​was​ ​Jesperson’s​ ​only​ ​African-American​ ​victim.​ ​He​ ​killed​ ​her​ ​in​ ​the​ ​summer​ ​of 1993​ ​and​ ​later​ ​said​ ​that​ ​her​ ​name​ ​was​ ​“Carla”​ ​or​ ​“Cindy”.​ ​The​ ​other,​ ​found​ ​in​ ​Crestview,​ ​Florida on​ ​September​ ​4th,​ ​1994,​ ​he​ ​claimed​ ​was​ ​around​ ​30​ ​years​ ​old​ ​and​ ​named​ ​“Susanne”.​ ​His​ ​sixth victim,​ ​Angela​ ​Surbrize,​ ​was​ ​22​ ​when​ ​Jesperson​ ​killed​ ​her​ ​in​ ​January​ ​of​ ​1995​ ​after​ ​travelling with​ ​her​ ​for​ ​a​ ​while.​ ​His​ ​statements​ ​on​ ​where​ ​this​ ​took​ ​place​ ​were​ ​controversial,​ ​sometimes claiming​ ​it​ ​was​ ​in​ ​Wyoming,​ ​sometimes​ ​in​ ​Nebraska,​ ​but​ ​her​ ​body​ ​was​ ​found​ ​in​ ​Wyoming. Lastly,​ ​Jesperson​ ​killed​ ​his​ ​fiancee,​ ​Julie​ ​Ann​ ​Winningham​ ​in​ ​Washougal,​ ​Washington​ ​when​ ​she was​ ​41​ ​years​ ​old​ ​on​ ​March​ ​10th,​ ​1995.​ ​(Krueger​ ​2006) WANTED Keith​ ​Hunter​ ​Jesperson Serial​ ​Killer/Rapist Age:​ ​39 Height:​ ​6’6” Weight:​ ​270​ ​lbs Eyes/Hair:​ ​Blue/Blond Born​ ​April​ ​6th,​ ​1955​ ​in​ ​Chilliwack,​ ​British​ ​Columbia. Arrested​ ​March​ ​30th,​ ​1995​ ​in​ ​Washougal,​ ​Washington-​ ​given life​ ​sentences​ ​in​ ​several​ ​different​ ​states​ ​including​ ​California, Oregon,​ ​and​ ​Florida​ ​for​ ​first​ ​and​ ​second​ ​degree​ ​murder. Killed​ ​8​ ​women,​ ​mostly​ ​prostitutes​ ​besides​ ​his​ ​last​ ​victim (his​ ​fiancee).​ ​Chose​ ​victims​ ​seemingly​ ​by​ ​convenience​ ​or​ ​if​ ​they aggravated​ ​him,​ ​all​ ​were​ ​killed​ ​by​ ​strangulation. He​ ​wrote​ ​confessional​ ​notes​ ​to​ ​the​ ​media​ ​and​ ​signed​ ​them with​ ​a​ ​smiley​ ​face,​ ​giving​ ​him​ ​the​ ​nickname​ ​“Happy​ ​Face​ ​Killer”.
