1 Coal/Biomass Proximate Analysis Questions John Worthley, [email protected], 18 September 2017 Question 1: What determines the quality of coal, its appropriateness for use, and its economic value? Answer: The quality, purpose of use, and economic value all are measured to classify coal. Coal quality is evaluated using national standards such as the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Standards. 1 Based on its properties, coal is ranked by classification into four categories of bituminous, lignite, sub-bituminous, and anthracite coal. 1 An analysis of the coal can include various methods including total moisture, proximate analysis, ultimate analysis, calorific value, etc. 1 Coal for energy use, cement manufacturing, and metallurgical purposes require varying sources of coal qualities. 2 The appropriateness for use of coal is based on the properties and quality ranking. Coal fit for electricity can range from Lignite to Anthracite and is more dependent on the local environment and what forms of coal it is able to provide for people living within the vicinity.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
