Leco Truspec CHN Ultimate Analysis of Fuel Samples to Determine Composition of Sample and Fuel Effectiveness John Worthley, [email protected] , September 25, 2017 Abstract Ultimate analysis of fuels produces valuable information about fuels such as oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulfur, ash, carbon, and moisture. From this data, the analysis can be converted into different basis’s in dry, ash, and dry mineral free. Coal heating value contributes to product weights, coal feed rates, combustion atmosphere requirements, and boiler statistics. The most efficient energy producing fuels can be obtained, those with the least number of emissions. Desirable yields and product characteristics of various fuels can be obtained for any working condition. Introduction Subtle differences in coal characteristics can be determined through ultimate analysis, an empirical approach to determining the elemental analysis of coal. Important criteria may help predict yields and devolatilization behavior of any coal from its ultimate analysis 1 . Ultimate analysis measures coal content through a calculation of the component carbon, hydrogen, sulfur, nitrogen, and oxygen by critical differences. 2 Recently these methods have been able to be perfected by multiple regression and artificial neural network models showcasing key components through precise stepwise least square mathematical methods 2 Dangerous conditions and improvements could be monitored in real time to provide faster tracking methods for coal and its combustion. Requirements such as the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 include provisions to safeguard power plants from exposing too much noxious gases to the environemtn. 3 The ultimate analysis is able to provide all necessary scrubbing and cleaning methods to dispense of waste and irregular material in a proper and safeguarded manner. Through this study, the ultimate analysis was able to determine the proper composition of fuels by their elemental analysis. Materials included a Leco True Spec CHN analyzer to determine carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur. All in all, the dry ash free, dry, and mineral
