MUH2018 Chapter 1: Listening to Jazz Book Notes o Sounds associated with jazz : Vibrato : pulsating effect produced by small, rapid variations in pitch. Used mostly for warmth and interpretation in imitating a human voice Instrumentation : different types of instruments that make up an ensemble Rhythm section : the section of an instrumental ensemble that provides the most prominent rhythmic feel of the music, usually consisting of drums, piano, bass, and guitar Chord : the simultaneous sounding of three or more tones o Improvisation and Composition Improvisation : performing of music that is made up at the moment, not performed from memory or from written music o Rhythm: Syncopation Syncopation : accenting a normally weak beat or the weak part of a beat o Syncopation and Swing Accents : to stress a melodic note, rhythm, or harmony by playing it louder and with a sharper attack o Form Phrases : small units of melody Repetition : presentation of the same musical material in two or more parts of a composition Contrast : introduction of different musical material
