1. Write out the procedure that you followed in lab to separate the four cations. Write it in a step
by step manner so that someone else performing the experiment could follow it.
The first step to separate the four cations is to add HCl drops to precipitate as much of the
substance as you can. Next, a white precipitate, containing the cation Pb
2+
, should form. Then,
perform a test for confirming the presence of lead by dissolving the precipitate, adding acetic
acid, and adding potassium chloride to create a bright yellow precipitate. Next, use the first
supernatant fluid that was distilled from the Pb
2+
precipitate, and with the addition of 6M NaOH,
and a white precipitate should form that contains the cations ZrO
2+
and Ni
2+
. Next, the new
supernatant fluid should still hold the cation Al
3+
, and so then use 6M HCl to make then solution
acidic. After that, add 6M NH
3
and a red precipitate should form, which should hold the cation
Al
3+
. Then, perform a confirmation test ensure the Al
