EVR 4596L Applied Field Ecology Spring 2017 Instructor: Dr. Michael Ross (AHC5-367) Phones: Office: (305-348-1420) Cell (emergencies): 305-781-4986 The course objectives are (1) to learn in a hands-on way about the major south Florida ecosystems, their characteristic plant and animal species, and their important management issues, and (2) to gain experience with sampling strategy, field methods, and effective interpretation and reporting of ecological data for management and scientific purpose. The class is organized around six labs, which address the major south Florida ecosystems: pine forests, hardwood hammocks, freshwater marshes and forests, and mangrove swamps. During the semester, we will encounter many of the se ecosystems’ major plant species, which students will be tested on in the practical portion of the final exam. Learning Outcomes: (1) You will learn to recognize the major south Florida plants and some of the charismatic avifauna, and become familiar with the fundamentals of their ecology; (2) You will learn essential methods regarding the design, processing, and interpretation of data collected for management purposes, following the sequence in the textbook “Designing field studies for biodiversity conservation”, by Peter
