1.7 Combining VB and MO Theory o Valence bond theory sees bonding between the electrons in atoms next to each other, and  from there we get hybridization states. MO theory explains how the orbitals are made o Energy of antibonding orbitals go up further than the drop experienced by bonding  orbitals o Wherever there is a double bond, sp2 hybridization should be considered o Pi molecular orbital = a molecular orbital with a nodal plane that cuts through both  atomic nuclei, with electron density concentrated above and below the nodal plane o 4 groups bonded to carbon = sp3 hybridization = 4 sigma bonds = 109.5 degrees  o 3 groups = sp2 = 120 degrees = 3 sigma and 1 pi bond o 2  groups = sp = 180 degrees = 2 sigma and 2 pi bond 1.8 Resonance Theory of Resonance o Resonance is a theory that molecules can be described as a hybrid of various lewis  structures. The individual lewis structures = contributing structures. (aka resonance
