Assignment 08 2 Many anthropologists, sociologists, along with other scholars and intellectuals, have created social theories discussing their approaches to understanding technological progress and how they feel it is the primary factor driving the development of our social world. Gerhard Lenski, Leslie White, and Alvin Toffler all offer different perspectives on the social impact of technology. It is the intent of this essay to describe, compare, and contrast their offerings as part of a discussion on technology’s impact on humanity. Sociologist Gerhard Lenski strongly believed that technological progress has been the major catalyst in the evolution of human civilization (Elwell, 2013). He believed that the key to human progress is information, particularly the more one knows about how to gather and use the resources of the world, the greater their ability to advance interests of society (Elwell, 2013). Lenski noted four stages of communication: first, genes passed from generation to generation; second, sentience, or the gaining of experience leading to understanding the world, adapt and share that experience; third, the development of logic, creating collective goals developing logic based on observation and fact-based analysis; and fourth, the mastery of language, symbol creation, and writing (Elwell, 2013).
