SOIL EDUCATION FACTS ABOUT KEEPING THE EARTH GREEN What is soil? The upper layer of earth in which plants grow, a black or dark brown material typically consisting of a mixture of organic remains, clay, and rock particles. Soil is a vital part of the natural environment. It influences the distribution of plant species and provides a habitat for a wide range of organisms. Soil composition is an important aspect of nutrient management. Soil water is what readily provides nutrients for plant uptake. www.boundless.com What can be done to prevent soil erosion? The four most common soil erosion prevention methods are vegetation, geotextiles, mulch, and retaining walls. Vegetation: The simplest and most natural way to prevent erosion is through planting vegetation. Plants establish root systems, which stabilizes soil and prevents soil erosion.
