Immunology Exam 1 1. Name the primary lymphoid tissues in mammals and the main types of secondary lymphoid tissue. a. Primary lymphoid tissues= bone marrow, thymus, and liver in fetus i. Primary lymphoid organs are where lymphocytes develop and mature to the stage at which they are able to respond to a pathogen b. Secondary lymphoid organs = Lymph nodes, spleen, MALT, GALT (such as tonsils, adenoids, appendix, and peyer’s patches) and BALT i. Secondary lymphoid organs are sites wehre mature lymphocytes become stimulated to respond to invading pathogens ii. Antigen is delivered to the secondary lymphoid tissues through an afferent lymphatic vessel, and is retained in the lymphoid tissue for encounter with lymphocytes bearing antigen specific receptors 1. Apart from bone marrow and thymus, all other lymphoid tissues are known as secondary iii. B cells mature in the bone marrow and fetal liver iv. T cells mature in the thy thymus 1. Both lymphocyte lineages are derived from a common hematopoietic stem cell 2.
