Unit 6 Lab Questions The Real CSI 1. What happened in the investigation of the Madrid bombings with the fingerprint evidence? After the Madrid bombings took place the investigators found seven partial prints that was then sent through different scientists, but no matches were found. Then The partials were sent to the FBI where the examiner found a match. This matched them to Portland Oregon to an attorney named Mayfield. They arrested Mayfield who turned out to be a Muslim. Mayfield claimed he did not do it. The Partials were examined again by another examiner then the head of the FBI confirmed it was a positive match. Eventually the Spanish police made a positive match to a different man. It was not Mayfield’s fingerprints. This sparked controversy on whether or not fingerprint evidence was even reliable. 2. What assumptions have been made about fingerprints? What are the problems with these assumptions? The assumptions that were made about fingerprints are that they are 100 percent infallible and that no two people have the same fingerprint. There are a few problems with this very inaccurate assumption. First of all there has never been a scientific study to prove that these assumptions are correct. Because of this
