What Is Hybrid Orbital Theory? It is a quantum mechanical approach to explain Covalent Bond formation. According to this two or more pure atomic orbitals ( usually s , p and d ) can be mixed to form two or more new hybrid atomic orbitals that are identical.

To understand how interactions of atomic orbitals give rise to chemical bonds Leads to predict/determine the molecular geometry/shape of the molecules BIOLOGICAL APPLICATIONS : Many biochemical processes are specific to the shapes of molecules involved Molecules responsible for the odor of a substance have distinct shapes, which enables them to stimulate our sense of smell e.g.parts of Benzaldehyde molecule are shaped such that they stimulate the camphor like, floral & piperminty receptors. This is a combination that we perceive as the smell of almonds.
