PSY 102: Chapter 1-2 Study Guide Definitions: Define the function of the cerebral cortex: Think, evaluate, and make complex judgements. Most sophisticated processing. There are diff. areas-motor, sensory, association. responsible for sophisticated, uniquely human information processing. Define hemisphere as it relates to the brain: Left brain/right brain. Control motion/receive sensation from the side of the body opposite of their location. LEFT-verbal competence, speaking, reading, thinking, reasoning. Process info. Sequentially, one bit at a time. RIGHT- understanding of spatial relationships, recognition of patterns and drawings, music, and emotional expression. Process info. Globally, considering it as a whole. left and right halves of the brain and each controls motion and sensation in the opposite side of the body. Define descriptive and experimental research: descriptive-designed to systematically investigate a person, group, or patterns of behavior. Methods include archival research, naturalistic observation, survey research, and case studies. Experimental-can establish a cause-and- effect relationship through research by carrying out an experiment. experimental research: establish cause and effect relationships using formal experiments descriptive research: offers insight into relationships between variables. Define correlational study: two sets of variables are examined to determine whether they are associated, or “correlated.” The strength and direction of the relationship between the 2 variables are represented by a mathematical statistic known as a correlation. Positive correlation-as one variable increases, we can predict that the value of the other variable will increase. Negative correlation- as the value of one variable increases, the value of the other decreases. two sets of variables are examined to see if they are associated Define neurotransmitter: chemicals that carry messages across the synapse to a dendrite (and sometimes the cell body) of a receiving neuron. the chemical messengers received at dendrites or cell body of receiving neuron Lists: List the four goals of psychology. describe, explain, predict and control
