Zach is a seventeen year old young man with a rare bone cancer, osteosarcoma. Because of inoperable tumors in his lungs as well as the requirement to amputate his leg and part of his pelvis to keep him alive, he was given six months to live and in the short documentary made on him and his story, he shows his love for life and willingness to live life to its fullest, literally until the day he dies. Key principles or concepts from the course that can be suggested in offering direction for this family include the importance of flexible but firm family structure. Family structure will be super important for them as they navigate knowing that Zach will die from his disease and preparing to deal with the void in their family as they heal. Having firm structure will help them prevent confusion and extra stress while they grieve. Something else I believe will help them is to understand the models of stress and what might affect their family while they deal with the tragedy.
