POSSIBLE PSYC1F90/1F25 MIDTERM EXAM QUESTIONS = Questions to be discussed at the last seminar/tutorial. Seven questions will be chosen for the 1F90 exam, and two new questions will be added, for a total of 9 required questions, each worth 5 marks. There will also be 110 multiple-choice questions, worth ½ mark each. The 1F90 examination will be 3 hours long and total 100 marks. Five questions will be chosen for the 1F25 exam, and one new question will be added, for a total of 6 required questions, each worth 5 marks. Q1 What is the difference between experiential and reflective cognition? Which is more important for good academic performance? Explain and relate to the two processes of self-reflection and critical thinking. Experiential cognition - style of thought arising during passive experience (not thinking about what you’re doing) reflective cognition- style of thought arising while actively think about an experience Reflective cognition is more important for academic performance. This is because reflective thinking can help you better understand and remember details about an experience and helps in comprehension and long term memory storage. Experimental cognition: When you are subconsciously thinking about implications and meaning when studying material. Critical thinking: the ability to evaluate and compare information (ex: comparing Brock’s findings with other article findings on the PSYC 1F90 stress survey). * Q2 What are the two criteria for critical thinking in psychology. In the end, which of the two criteria is more important? Why? The two criteria are empirical evidence and theory. Empirical evidence is science research. In order for science to be empirical it must be evident. Theory is system of ideas that relate to existing body of research. The evidence is more important than theory because not only are theories based on evidence, but it also can falsify old theories, create new theories, and revise existing ones (based on the evidence that is presented) Q4 What is the difference between “reality” and “Reality”? How does psychophysics allow us to bridge the two? (Casey)

There is a distinct difference between “reality” and “Reality”. “reality” refers to our perceived version of what is real while “Reality” refers to what is actually real. Psychophysics allows us to bridge the two as physical energy (such as sound waves or electromagnetic radiation) is measured and related to dimensions of the resulting sensations we experience. (Page 126). Q5 What is the “triune brain”? What functions are carried out by each of the levels and what does it mean to say that they result in “competing operating systems”?
