JORDAN 1 ASC200 – SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES W EEK 1 LECTURE: INTRODUCTION Living building challenge considers energy, water, site, materials, beauty, health and equity Sustainability is enough, for all, forever THREE COMPONENTS OF SUSTAINABILITY - social - economical - environmental CO-BENEFIT - when it fits in more than one category - eg. interlocking brick, economic because of cheap repair and creates jobs, social because it attracts people, environmental because it allows trees to grow through - eg. CIRS building, economic because it is cheaper than steel, social because of biophilia (love of nature), environmental because it captures/absorbs CO2 ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE - disturbance of environment caused by human influences (focus) - HOLOCENE 10’000 years of sustainability - ANTHROPOCENE disrupted by industrialization - By 2100 we will run out of fossil fuels, we need to decouple energy consumption and activity READING: HEATING, COOLING, LIGHTING - easter island was inhabited by Polynesians, the Polynesians exploited
