Although Adam Smith would generally be against government intervention, particularly in cases involving free market, I do not believe he would support the merging of American Airlines and US Airways. Therefore, it is evident that he would circumstantially be of the Department of Justice’s plan to “ground the merger.” Smith is clear in his anti-monopolistic beliefs in that they hurt capitalistic economies. “The great enemy to Adam Smith’s system is not so much government per se as monopoly in any form (Heilbroner,69) .” Thus, he would propose that government intervention, in this case, would be the lesser of the two evils. Smith’s great fear was not government intervention itself, but the potential consequences interference or alliances with large corporations could have on capitalism and competition. Consequently, relating back to the Brace brace article, if the government were to allow the merging of two huge airline companies, it is likely that even more large carriers
