Tanya Jordan Colman Hogan ENG 104 09/22/2016 Edgar Allan Poe puts in sequence the proper way of writing literary work followed by nine essential considerations. In his opinion, history should afford a thesis, whether it is in the form of a compelling incident or a combination of incidents, to form the body of a narrative. One of the key components is the effect, with “keeping originality always in view” to choose the effect that is important to the heart, intellect and soul (4). The vivid effect is influenced by both incident and tone or a combination of events and tones to bring about the desired, coveted effect. Poe acknowledges that writers compose their work out of ecstatic intuition, vacillating thoughts, and the figments of ideas that materialize at the last moment. Poe also uses the play of opposing but complimentary words to define what constitutes the “properties of literary histrio”(5).
