Eichman 1 Stephanie Eichman Professor Noah Levin Philosophy G100 14 October 2016 Paper #1: Lesson 8 Analysis Does the mind or the body play a more critical role in determining who we are? Lesson eight poses a theoretical situation where a doctor performs a head transplant and asks who is the resultant person: the body donor or the owner of the brain? In this case, it is critical to distinguish the resultant person as “Joanne,” whose brain is attached to a new body. The human brain is incredibly complex, “[controlling] our movements, communication, decisions and emotions, as well as our organs” (Fiket). Although Joanne may not be in her “original” body, it is her mind that is controlling all the actions and vital functions of the new body she is placed in. Without her brain, the body she is in could not survive; Joanne, however, could survive without a majority of the body she is now attached to. Although quality of life can diminish, humans still live and function despite paraplegia, quadriplegia, and other crippling body conditions. In these situations, it is made obvious how important the brain, and not the body, is in determining a “person.” Alternatively, it may be argued that Joanne could not live without the body, or at least

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
