Tanya Jordan Colman Hogan ENG 104 09/22/2016 The Green Man Short Story Essay A suburban man plays the main character in this story with his wife and daughter - living in a painted house with a picket fence. He saved up to move out of the city to live in this ideal town. He is the model of the suburban man, based on the expectations of the society. Like in Poe’s Philosophy of Composition, the repetitive use of specific words sets the tone and the mood of the story itself. In this essay, the word green is the nature of the refrain. Green is an effective and convincingly dominant color. Green represents life and the color of nature. Green also represents powerful emotions including lust, envy, jealousy, cunning and anger. The setting of the story is in the main character’s hometown, where a band of travelling gypsy caravan rolled into this sanitized and idyllic space. The locale plays a primary role in creating the sequence of events. The force of stark contrast between a picture-perfect place being invaded by hordes of strange, uncivilized people leads the reader to experience that as if a gypsy has invaded the reader’s own personal space. As if a stranger has barged into a sacred, private world where every single sense is trashed and violated.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
