The enlightenment partly influenced the colonial independence movement from 1754 and 1776, a philosophical base was built and new ideas of liberty arose from this period that influenced colonist's outlook on what an ideal government is, and their actions towards independence. However, other motifs during the colonial independence movement had higher influences on the colonist’s actions such as Britains unfair treatment. The enlightenment introduced ideas that everyone is created equal, for example John Locke in his “Essay Concerning Human Understanding” questioned why kings have a divine right to rule and how they could if everyone was born equal, creating a new idea of equality and liberty. These new ideas from philosophers such as Locke led to colonists drifting from their British roots and believing in different principles than what they had before. For example, from John Locke the ideal of Republicanism that stressed liberty and inalienable rights rose as an ideal.
