Environmental Factors and Growth Microbes survive and grow under a wide range of environmental conditions e.g. Extremophiles grow under extreme conditions of pH, temperature, pressure, etc ( Figs 5.2,3,5 ) (Slides 1-3) Can have slow doubling time. (extremophiles) Influence of Some Environmental Factors on Growth Microbes can be classified according to their preferred growth environment ( Table 5.1 ) (Slide 4) 1. Temperature Some examples: o Influences enzyme activity o membrane fluditiy phospholipids, FATS. Ex. Stick of butter when it melts. When temperature changes, If it is too high it melts. Too cold is freezes o DNA stability hygroden bonds, too high, they become apart o etc. The Cardinal Temperatures (Slide 5) o Minimum Less than that, microbes die o Optimum Point of maximum. Go beyond, it is like falling off a cliff o Maximum When the growth rate goes down. It is very low, “the end of life” Each organism has unique cardinal temp profile (Slide 6, Fig 5.1B) o It is possible that L. Delbruckii can be higher than E. Coli.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
