The readings this week explore the role of owning in the Good Life. What is it important to own and why? How does “owning” make life better? What does it mean to own something and how to you take or keep possession of it? What should be owned privately, what publicly or communally, and what not at all? How do the buyer and seller benefit (or not) from an exchange of ownership? Each reading this week set up a contrast between two different conceptions “owning.” In “The Painted Desert” the Ngurrara artists have a different view than Sotheby’s and its clients. In “The Semplica-Girl Diaries,” Eva has a different view than her parents. Choose one reading and explain the contrast. Use the questions above to prompt your thinking, but you do not have to address all of them in your response.
