Lecture 6 Tobacco and Slavery in the Chesapeake Tobacco dominated European settlement in the seventeenth-century Chesapeake. As the cultivation of tobacco increased, so did the need for land and labor, both of which were further complicated by tobacco’s depletion of the soil, as well as the headright system that placed further need for expansion into the Virginia frontier. As more tobacco was produced, the demand for labor increased proportionately, to the point that, for varying reasons, the supply of English labor failed to meet the increasing needs. The short supply of labor resulted in tobacco farmers turning to slavery to meet their labor needs. The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
