Semantics is the study of meaning in language Meaning of linguistic entities such as morphemes, words, phrases, sentences, and utterances Broad field There are many types of meaning Many levels where meanings may be constructed Types of meaning - lexical lexical semantics (lexical meaning) Word meaning new chairs now too expensive Expensive academic positions Expensive chairs in a building Deer with big rack female, it turns out Types of meaning - compositional compositional meaning The meaning of a sentence (or phrase) based on the internal relations of the parts Crucially concerns syntax I hate pickles: grammatical features tell you that I is the one experiencing the emotion of hate , and pickles are the target of the hatred or what invoke the emotional response of hatred Pragmatics: Utterance meaning Examines the meanings of utterances used in particular contexts Examines the role of contextual factors in the interpretation of meanings I don’t have any money This sentence, uttered in different contexts can mean very different things
