In 2013, I was hit by a car while riding my bicycle. I woke in the hospital, lights shining in my eyes, people standing over me. The last thing I remember well is turning onto the street where I got hit. I don’t remember the accident. I don’t remember being picked up off the ground by paramedics. But one thing that I’ll never forget is the feeling that I couldn’t move as I lay in that hospital bed. I remember asking a nurse in the room with me if I was going to be okay, then watching him shrug and say, “that’s what we’re trying to find out.” Luckily, I just had a concussion and some major bruising. That feeling of immobility was due to a mixture of drugs and muscle weakness. But for many people the answer to my question has been “no.” No, you are not going to be okay. You are not going to move your legs and arms again. You are not going to climb that hill, or swim in that lake. In fact, about six million Americans suffer from some form of paralysis. These people don’t get to do the things that everyone here takes for granted. Something as simple as driving a car, or using a
